people living in Eastern Cape province of South Africa and traditionally speaking a Xhosa language (one of the Bantu languages).

Mfengu are an African ethnic group of South Africa who were forced off their land in 1977 and 1978.

Appearently the word "Mfengu" means "foreigners" as their ancestors moved to the Eastern Cape as one of many Nguni groups fleeing Shaka Zulu.

They are one of the population groups which speak isiXhosa but don't consider themselves abeXhosa.
